STAT ATTACK

i must admit, i heard this stat on one of the many football podcasts i listen to with surprising regularity.

the World Cup draw has been quite interesting, and as expected, there has been so much discussion about the draws and the seedings. like yesterday at FJ just before Grad Nite, when we were talking about who we expected to go through. some of the groups are fairly straightforward to call, but others, not so. Group of Death, G, is particularly difficult, although I do want to see how the DPRK’s team reacts after they get tonked 195-0 by Brazil in their first game.

when was the last time the DPRK got to a world cup? 1966, where they managed to give Eusebio’s Portugal a scare in a 5-3 loss, going down after being 3-0 up. what else happened in 1966? England won the World Cup, after the hosts were put in Group 1 with Mexico, Uruguay, and France.

wait.

South Africa (the hosts) are in Group A (formerly known as 1) with Mexico, Uruguay, and France. so now, either England or South Africa have to be favourites to win the World Cup next year.

another personal favourite statistic of mine :the champions league final in 1999 (26th May 1999) would have been the 90th birthday of Sir Matt Busby, the Manchester United manager who won the European Cup in 1968.

i want to find out all these funny coincidences. just for kicks.
